The Landmark Studio for the Arts is preparing to take audiences on an unforgettable emotional journey with its upcoming production of Next to Normal, set to open August 15th at 405 Main Street in Sutton. For mature audiences, parental discretion advised.
This powerful rock musical, written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, tackles themes of mental health, family dynamics, grief, and resilience — all with raw honesty and stunning musicality. Performances will run August 15-16 and 21-23 at 8:00 p.m., with tickets available online or at the door. Director Becky Conrad describes the process of bringing Next to Normal to the stage as both challenging and deeply rewarding. “This isn’t your typical musical,” said Conrad. “It demands emotional honesty from the cast and the audience alike. But when the music and the storytelling click, it’s incredibly powerful. This is a show that stays with you long after the curtain falls. I have a personal connection to this story because I’ve experienced great loss in my own life. I understand firsthand the mental health effects grief can have on the body and the mind. It’s been incredibly rewarding to help tell this story and remind people they are not alone in their struggles. And on top of that, getting to create this piece alongside my friends and family makes the experience even more special.”
At the heart of the musical is Diana Goodman, a suburban mother battling bipolar disorder. The show explores the ripple effects her mental illness has on her husband Dan, daughter Natalie, and their family’s efforts to find balance amidst chaos. Taylor High, who plays the role of Diana and also assists with production, says Next to Normal is unlike anything the Landmark has staged in recent years. “This show is deeply human. It doesn’t sugarcoat anything, but that’s exactly why it’s so important,” said High. “Audiences will walk away seeing pieces of themselves in these characters. It’s messy, it’s beautiful, it’s real.”
The cast, which also features standout performances from Kristopher High (Gabe), Jamie Jarvis (Dan), Emma Rose (Natalie), Frank Hamrick (Dr. Fine/Madden), Elijah Carr (Henry) has spent the summer digging into the emotional layers of the script. “We’ve cried together, laughed together, and really supported each other through the rehearsal process,” added High. “It’s created a bond among the cast that I think will come across on stage.” The Landmark’s intimate space enhances the raw and personal nature of the show. Without elaborate sets or special effects, the focus stays firmly on the actors and the story they’re telling. “This is what theatre is meant to do,” said Conrad. “It’s meant to spark conversation, stir emotion, and maybe even help people heal a little.”
Tickets for Next to Normal are available online or can be purchased at the door. Seating is first come, first served.
Don’t miss your chance to experience this emotionally charged, Tony Award-winning musical — right in the heart of Sutton.
