Visit the 250 American Anniversary Mural located in Downtown Sutton, West Virginia! The mural is painted on the Main Street facing side of Cardboard Coliseum. This colorful two story mural features much of what makes Braxton County, great! Great outdoors, rural living, beautiful rivers, the Sutton Dam, and wait, what?… Bigfoot!? UFOs?! Flatwoods Monster?! Nuka Cola?! Yes ALL OF THOSE THINGS!!!
The mural was conceived and executed by a team of art students and faculty from Fairmont State University. The team presented multiple proposals to the Braxton County Commission in partnership with the Braxton County CVB and Cardboard Coliseum (who would ultimately host the work) who decided on a proposal and funded the project in partnership with the West Virginia Tourism initiative, America250 Mural Project. Celebrate West Virginia’s Story, One Mural at a Time
West Virginia is making history as the first state in the nation to launch a statewide America250 Mural Project with funding for new and original works, honoring our rich heritage and vibrant communities through art. This program was announced by Governor Morrisey in November 2025 and will the trail will be launched next spring. As part of this historic initiative, each of the state’s 55 counties will receive funding to create a hand-painted mural that celebrates both local and national pride. We’re calling on talented artists and passionate community members to help bring the story of the Mountain State to life. To support your county’s participation, a $5,000 grant is available for County Commissions to apply for to help cover materials and artist fees.
