The Gassaway Train Depot was constructed in 1914 and was the main northern stop after West Virginia’s Capital on the Elk River Railroad. The depot was restored and reopened after many years of setting unused. The structure has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1994 and it has become an educational museum featuring old railroad memorabilia, artifacts and turn of the century railroad station architecture history. It is used by students and enthusiasts of all ages to learn about the Elk River Railroad and Community of Gassaway. The depot is nestled in captivating mountain scenery and located alongside the Elk River Rails to Trails Route in Gassaway between 4th and 5th Streets. The Depot is within walking distance of Davis Grade Children School, the children’s park and main street (Elk Street) businesses and restaurants. Today, the station functions as a meeting and gathering place which can be booked for public or private use. Indoor and outdoor venue space is available for weddings, parties, auctions, workshops and just about anything else you can think of. The Depot will have ongoing restoration that will preserve the historic structure and will be a place for special events and festivals throughout the year.
